Navigating Complexity with Expertise and Precision for Every Business

If you’re running a business and constantly wondering whether your books are accurate, your payroll is being handled correctly, or you’re truly prepared for tax time, you’re not alone.

In today’s economy, guessing gets expensive.

Hi I'm Melissa Smallwood. Founder and President of SIM Financial Services. We help individuals, entrepreneurs and growing businesses gain clarity around their finances so they can make better decisions, stay compliant and build stronger, more sustainable businesses.

Through SIM Financial Services, I provide practical financial guidance and reliable execution in areas including:

  • Accounting & bookkeeping

  • Payroll and payroll compliance

  • Tax preparation and planning

  • QuickBooks support and training

  • Business formation and operational guidance

  • Financial education for business owners

My approach is different from simply “doing the books.” I believe business owners should understand what their numbers are telling them.

That means helping clients answer questions like:

Am I actually profitable?
Can I afford to hire?
Am I setting enough aside for taxes?
Are my books clean enough to make good decisions?
Is my business structured and operating the way it should be?

My accounting career began in the construction industry, where I progressed from Accounting Assistant to Project Accountant and later Controller, managing corporate accounting functions and gaining firsthand experience with the financial systems businesses rely on every day.

I earned my Bachelor’s Degree in Management with a minor in Accounting from Ottawa University and later a Masters in Accounting and PhD in Statistics from Florida International University. .

After nearly a decade in corporate accounting, I transitioned into the nonprofit sector as Director of Community Partnerships for Rebuilding Together Broward County. That experience strengthened something that remains central to how I work today: financial expertise matters, but so do relationships, communication and understanding the people behind the numbers.

Today, I bring those experiences together through SIM Financial Services.

We work with clients who may have outgrown DIY bookkeeping, need a more reliable accounting partner, are preparing for growth, or simply want someone who can help make the financial side of running a business feel less overwhelming.

You don’t need more financial jargon. You need accurate numbers, practical guidance and a partner who helps you understand what comes next.

That’s what we’re here to provide.

"Ms. Smallwood has assisted our company for many years with superior knowledge, experience, and professionalism in the role of business consultant. She has helped us grow through the very difficult times we have all faced.

In 20 years of operation, we have used other firms with similar backgrounds, but none compared to the expertise of Ms. Smallwood’s firm.”
